The current module on 'Methadone Substitution' is the fifth in the series of the six modules of the intervention tool-kit developed under the UNODC-ROSA project entitled 'Prevention of transmission of HIV among Drug Users in SAARC Countries' (Project code- AD/RAS/03/H13). The aims of the current module are:
1. To outline the effectiveness of methadone in the management of heroin and other opioid dependence and in preventing HIV amongst injecting opioid users.
2. To describe the guidelines and procedures for methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) for opioid dependence.
3. To discuss issues relating to dispensing of methadone and a roll out plan for methadone substitution clinics.
4. To understand the quality assurance indicators in the operation of the methadone clinics.
