Report of the National Workshop on Interventions against Trafficking of Children
PDF File Size: 929 KB | Download
Trafficking is a problem that the world is trying hard to deal with. The problem is even greater in a country like Nepal where a majority of its population lives below the poverty line. Thousands of young children are lured and trafficked for various purposes.
A few years back the estimated number of those trafficked only for sexual exploitation was 5,000 to 7,000 and this has gone up to 12,000 according to the ILO latest data. In 1998, the ILO assisted the government of Nepal in drafting the first National Plan of Action to combat trafficking in children.
The national workshop was an attempt to not only sensitise but also to seek inputs from the Trade Unions, Employer's Associations and Teacher's Associations for the fight against trafficking. It also aimed at building consensus amongst the organisations to work for the elimination of trafficking of children, considered as one of the worst forms of child labour.
