The United Nations Population Fund - UNFPA released today the findings of the report Reproductive Health Morbidity Needs Assessment in Nepal. The joint UNFPA/ WHO (World Health Organization) study was carried out by the Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Teaching Hospital. This is the first national community based study on
reproductive health morbidity in Nepal which is linked with hospital services.
The study was conducted among nearly 2,849 ever married women of reproductive age (15-49 years) covering 8 districts of 5 different regions of Nepal. Of these 2,849 women, 2070 were clinically examined in district hospitals. The objective of the study was to determine the magnitude of the reproductive health morbidity in Nepal. The study has come up with key reproductive health indicators – the mean age at marriage is 15.36
years, nearly three fourths had their first pregnancy before the age of 19 years and a majority (91%) have given birth at home. Nearly one third use contraceptives, the most popular methods being permanent (almost half of them had minilap and nearly 10% of the women’s husbands had vasectomy). The issue of infertility has also been brought out by the report. The study has reported that one in ten Nepalese women suffer from uterine prolapse, also known as fallen womb, of which nearly one third require immediate surgical treatment. Women, as young as 20 years old suffer from this condition; nearly 14 % are between 20-29 years old. On an average, women suffer from uterine prolapse for eight years.
