This week sees several events celebrating World Press Freedom Day in Nepal with conferences initiated by UNESCCO in Kathmandu, Biratnagar and Nepalgunj. The motto of this year’s celebration of World Press Freedom Day that is observed worldwide on 3 May is “Dialogue on Freedom of Information: The Right to Know”. In Kathmandu on 18 May, a national workshop on “Dialogue on Freedom of Information: The Right to Know” will take place from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hotel Himalaya in Lalitpur. The event is being organized on behalf of UNESCO by the Nepal Press Institute jointly with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and in collaboration with the Federation of Nepalese
Journalists and the Information Commission of Nepal. The conference is expected to be opened by Minster of Communication and information Shankar Pokharel and attended by media practitioners, information managers and representatives of civil society. In Biratnagar and Nepalgunj on 20 May, the Federation of Nepali Journalist (FNJ), UNESCO, jointly with OHCHR is organizing two regional workshops on the same subject (from 8.30am to 1pm in Biratnagar Sagarmatha Party Palace and Nepalgunj Swastik Cottage Hall, Surkhet Road). UNESCO’s celebration of World Press Freedom Day 2010 highlights the importance of freedom of information as an integral part of freedom of expression and its contribution to democratic governance. The events organized on the occasion of the Day world-wide with the main event in Brisbane, Australia, on 3 May, are intended to foster reflection and exchange of ideas on freedom of information to advance empowerment, transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption.
