Abstract:
In collaboration with the Jana Utthan Pratishtan (JUPand the National Dalit -Nepal) Commission (NDC), the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu facilitated a crucial debate on “Reaching the Unreached: Ensuring Dalit Rights in Education”. This debate was approved as part the of UN Peace Fund Nepal project on “Planning the Effective Delivery of Education Systems in Future Federal Nepal”. Held in Lalitpur, on June 17, this debate was attended by a wide range of intellectuals, experts, and other distinguished personalities, including members of the three main political parties and members of the Constitutional Assembly. Amrit Bishwakarma, President of JUP-Nepal provided the welcome and introduction to start off the proceedings. Amita Vohra, Officer in-charge of the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, provided the opening remarks, during which she highlighted the continued commitment of the UN towards an inclusive Nepal through the apt use of affirmative action to help empower marginalized peoples. To conclude the introduction to the day’s activities, Tap Raj Panta, National Program Officer at the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, highlighted the objectives of the debate. (UN Newsletter)
