Identifying Evaluating and Interpreting the Physical Signature of Lumbini for Presentation, Management and Long-term Protection- Report of the First Season of Field Operations 2011
PDF File Size: 2.19 MB | Download
Abstract:
The site of Lumbini in Nepal was identified as the birthplace of the Buddha by Dr Fuhrer of the Archaeological Survey of India in 1895 due to the presence of an Asokan inscription, and supported by records from the fourth century AD Chinese pilgrim Fa Xian (Coningham 2001). Despite over a century of archaeological research at Lumbini, including recent Japanese-led excavations in 1996, no material from pre-Asokan (third century BC) layers have been recovered, something that the current mission aims to address. However, this is not a phenomenon restricted to Lumbini, as a similar situation prevails at the other key sites associated with the life of the Buddha - Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kusinagara.
